Artist Book: Mind Games

For my artist's book, I decided after talking with Dawn to do a complete 360 from my original idea. I will now be focusing more on the science of memory - brain and microscopic imagery that is literally a photograph of memory itself, working in a definitive manner. As I said in class, I plan to use various MRI and PET scan images of the brain of patients asked to remember or think about certain things and compare these images to those in a relaxed state of mind. I also intend to compare images of people with Alzheimer's and people on drugs and how those conditions effect their state of memory. I plan to put my book in a doctor's "chart" (if anyone has any suggestions as to how I should keep all the pages together in the chart, please let me know - usually the pages in a chart are just shoved in a manila folder in chronological order). I also plan to use transparencies and print the MRI and PET scan images onto these transparencies (only some images, many overlaying actual images or representations of what the person was supposed to be thinking about since we can't include captions and you wouldn't be able to tell what people were thinking about without some form of explanation), giving them the appearance of x-rays.

I also would like to post the link to the website that I use to get a lot of nice pictures:

Some of my favorite pictures have come from this website, where various artists post their works:

  1. Emily,
I think the doctor's chart and MRI pictures idea is a really good one! It's a nice way to incorporate your major with this lovely honors project of ours. :) And I like the idea of comparing the drug user and Alzheimer's brains to regular ones. Also you could three hole punch your pages and maybe put them into one of those clear binder page things in which we were supposed to turn papers in during highschool...I totally can't remember the name, obviously not helpful, but I could explain it to you in person. It's very official looking, maybe that would work, though I don't know much about doctor's charts...Also I loved seeing you today :)

  2. The idea of using MRI and PET scans is really creative. It reminds us of the scientific aspects of memory instead of simply the artistic ones that photos would usually inspire. If you wanted to go with something reminiscent of the doctor's chart, you could take a manila envelope and somehow use that as the format for your binding...if that makes any sense.

(And I love deviantart too. :D)

  3. I love your idea and cannot wait to see the end project! (I'm kind of jealous I did not think of this myself, it is a crazy good way to incorporate our sciency background into this project). I'm not sure how to best explain the way that I would try to do the charts, but I'm going to give it my best shot! For the charts, I always think about how the have the hole punched tops to hold all of the papers in. I was thinking that maybe you could try to do that, and I'm sure you could find the right folders at Office Depot or some other office supply store. Another thing I think about when I think of charts are the thicker charts in hospitals that are almost like binders, but open along the short edge instead of the long. I have no idea where you would ever find one of these, but it would be an easy way to keep everything in one chart. In this case, however, you would probably only have one chart which might not work if your goal is to highlight a bunch of different disorders by using different "patient's" charts.

  4. Thank you all for your support and suggestions!
Tasha - I know exactly what you're talking about and that is a wonderful idea! I did not think of that.
    Anne - thank you!
Jenny - Those are great ideas! I might try a few things out and see how they look. Thank you so much for your input on charts... I only know of them what I've seen at my mom's doctors office!
    LOVE YOU ALL!

  5. This is a REALLy awesome idea. Your theme is completely pulled together by using the chart and the MRI pictures. The pictures in these blogs are seriously SOO cool! I couldn't stop looking at them. Your idea is really unique and I'm so excited to see what the end product will look like. I would have never thought to do a literal image of what memory is. That gives everyone a more scientific perspective, which I appreciate. I hope that you were able to find some cheaper clear paper. If anything try and see if you can do some cool tape transfers because I bet that would give your book a cool texture, instead of it just being a doctors chart it will have an artistic aspect to it.

  6. Be sure to keep in mind that the form should relate to the content, in a very clear manner. I believe using the framework of a doctor's chart will work well, and I don't believe you need to greatly embellish the pages to make it seemingly more artistic - the art comes from the relationship of the form to the content. Simply referencing the doctor's chart will reinforce the content - I'm not sure you need to worry about replicating the exact look of a doctor's chart, but instead could use the motif. I believe a mix of transparencies and opaque pages will work well, as you had mentioned.

Lastly, please be aware that if you will be using work from deviantART or other artist websites, that you will need to re-appropriate the work, and not use it "as-is". Copyright free images may be used in their entirety, but artist's work should not be replicated without some sort of modification to the existing work. You might also search for images that are designated as having a Creative Commons license (copyright free).
